Our association was founded in 2000 as GFI German Wholesale Markets e.V., initially as a pure marketing association. Ten years later, it was decided to open up to weekly markets and traditional market halls and to broaden the range of tasks. Through our involvement in the WUWM World Union of Wholesale Markets, GFI also became a renowned international partner in the industry. To mark its 25th anniversary, it adopted a new corporate design and a new name: BDF Federal Association of Fresh Food Markets e.V.

Today, the BDF represents

  • 95% of German-speaking wholesale market operators with the 17 most important wholesale markets in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Northern Italy
  • 85% of all weekly market operators with around 450 weekly markets in Germany’s metropolitan regions
  • Operators of 6 traditional market halls in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hanover and Stuttgart
  • Around 30 supporting members from across the entire value chain

The BDF sees itself as a partnership-based network that offers its members a broad institutionalised transfer of knowledge about market developments and key issues in trade management.

  • We are action partners, a network and a mouthpiece for our markets
  • We facilitate the exchange of information and experience
  • We organise platforms such as trade fairs and events
  • We offer our members services such as international study trips
  • We develop campaigns for greater visibility and relevance

Divisions:

  • In the BDF’s ‘wholesale markets’ and ‘weekly markets’ divisions, the focus is on topics related to increasing market efficiency and developing effective, sustainable wholesale market and weekly market models. The aim is to secure and further develop our locations, as well as to promote communication and best practices.
  • Our members live and breathe the association. Collaboration is a matter of honour. Everyone contributes their commitment, experience and
  • expertise to the joint shaping of the future of fresh produce markets.

Weekly markets – it doesn’t get any more colourful than this

  • Strengths: freshness, variety, quality, expertise, regionality, specialities
  • A relaxed shopping experience and colourful market bustle in the open air
  • Places of diversity and encounter that enliven city centres
  • A meeting place for generations, stories, traditions and trends

Historic market halls – unmistakable

  • Often over 100 years old and architecturally unique, market halls provide a refreshing contrast to uniform shopping centres in their cities.

FRUIT LOGISTICA is the world’s leading trade fair for the fruit trade.
Every year in February, over 90,000 top decision-makers from more than 90 countries meet in Berlin. In 26 halls, over 2,600 exhibitors from 90 countries present the entire range of the global fresh fruit industry.

The BDF has been represented at FRUIT LOGISTICA since 2001 and is an established player in the industry. At the joint stand, the wholesale markets present themselves as modern, versatile and high-quality trade and logistics platforms.

For the association, networking is a priority – all partners in the value chain, media and politics are brought together.

Your city needs vitamin G, like Großmarkt (wholesale market)

Our wholesale markets not only supply essential vitamins, but also act like a vitamin for life in our cities. So why not simply invent a vitamin that symbolises this invigorating effect of wholesale markets? This is the approach of the campaign with which we support the wholesale markets united under our umbrella.

Under the slogan ‘Your city needs vitamin G’, we show how diversely the wholesale market influences our lives and what it is good for. Healthy nutrition is only the most obvious of these positive effects – after all, it would be hard to imagine life without the wholesale market. Enjoyment and taste, good advice and guaranteed quality are just a few others. Not to mention the community experience at the weekly market, but also at the wholesale market as a multicultural meeting place par excellence – our dictionary is rich in beautiful words beginning with G that are predestined to fan out the effect profile of Vitamin G.

Love your local market/Erlebe Deinen Markt

Since 2015, the ‘Experience Your Weekly Market’ campaign has been Germany’s contribution to the international „LYLM Love Your Local Market“ movement. Every year, 4,000 markets across Europe and around the world take part in the celebrations. The international activities always take place mainly in May, which is Market Month.

In Germany, the celebrations now run until Thanksgiving in autumn. Experience Your Weekly Market’ is growing steadily. With 400 committed markets in 40 regions, the campaign has established itself as an integral part of the German weekly market scene. It provides a positive theme in a powerful international and national network.

As a platform, it supports market participants at all levels and gives them new self-confidence and pride. Despite all the challenges facing the weekly market trade, joy, fun, experiences and intense personal encounters are the focus of the festival weeks.

FRUCTINALE – celebrating the true stars of life: fresh food

Exclusive industry platform for fresh networking.

In 2009, the BDF took networking to a whole new level. With FRUCTINALE, one of the largest industry gatherings on the fringes of FRUIT LOGISTICA was launched.

Every two years, FRUCTINALE attracts over 250 guests from business, politics and the media. The mix of entertainment, fresh catering, networking and an unusual location makes our event unique. The who’s who of the fresh produce industry, with its dedicated medium-sized companies from production, wholesale, retail and catering, meets at our FRUCTINALE.

Our passion for markets – BDF study trips

Visual Portfolio, Posts & Image Gallery for WordPress

Since 2016, we at the BDV have been organising study trips to European market centres for our members. The aim is to facilitate a well-founded exchange of experiences on sustainable market concepts.

The BDF delegation receives support from colleagues at the WUWM, with whom we have a close relationship. Together with other exclusive local partners, they ensure that BDF members get a look behind the scenes and at the management of the markets, and take away valuable ideas for their own work in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
